Community leader. Builder. Thinker. I grew up watching clinics lose patients to paper chaos and came back from the United States with one question: what if we fixed that with data?

Portrait

The story so far.

I grew up in Cameroon watching clinics lose patient records to handwriting errors and hospitals fail basic queue management. These were not funding problems. They were data problems. That distinction shaped everything that came after.

At 15, from thousands of candidates across Cameroon, only 9 students were selected for the U.S. Department of State's Kennedy-Lugar YES Program. I was one of them. The American school placed me directly in Grade 12, two full years ahead. I graduated Magna Cum Laude, GPA 3.583, in a foreign language, an entirely different educational system, while competing in varsity cross-country and logging over 100 certified community service hours.

Throughout every single year of secondary school, I was elected class delegate (chef de classe) by my peers. Managing conflicts, mediating between students and faculty, carrying collective responsibility while maintaining top academic performance. Leadership earned through trust, not appointment.

Back home, I channelled that international perspective into community work: first-aid training for 60 youth across three cities, fundraising for school supplies, girls' skills workshops, school infrastructure improvement. Every initiative reinforced the same conviction: systems and data determine outcomes more than funding does.

That conviction became concrete when I conceived and directed MbaoMed, a digital health platform addressing healthcare access barriers across Cameroon. I identified the problem, designed the system architecture, directed the entire development process using modern AI-assisted tools, and documented the work in a peer-reviewed research article published on Zenodo, an open-access research repository endorsed by CERN and the European Commission. My paper is now publicly available to the global scientific community. It is my first published contribution to research at the intersection of AI, software engineering, and healthcare.

"I did not wait for a university lab to begin asking the important questions. The hospital waiting rooms of Cameroon were my first research environment."

I have not yet begun university. Every scholarship I have been awarded since secondary school has fallen short, not for lack of merit recognized, but because the funding was tied to specific institutions or simply insufficient to cover full tuition elsewhere. Yet I have not waited. I published original research, built a live digital health platform, led six community projects, and earned 21 certifications before setting foot in a university lecture hall. I am applying now for the scholarship that will finally let me begin, one that matches the standard of what I have already accomplished independently.

MbaoMed

A full-stack digital health platform conceived, designed, and directed as an independent research project to explore how modern software and AI can reduce healthcare access barriers in Cameroon. The work resulted in a published open-access research article available on Zenodo.

A digital patient registration prototype targeting two critical failures observed firsthand in Cameroonian hospitals: catastrophic data loss from handwritten records, and unmanageable queue times that cost people hours, sometimes care itself.

This is not a hypothetical problem. Research on hospital records in Cameroon has repeatedly found that a large share of diagnoses and causes of death recorded in patient files are inconsistent or incomplete, largely due to the absence of structured digital systems and limited training in standardized data entry. Studies on hospital mortality in Cameroon have also linked delays in care, often caused by overcrowding and poor patient-flow management rather than a lack of medical staff, to significantly higher risk of death.

74%
of recorded diagnoses at a major Yaoundé hospital were found to be heterogeneous or inconsistent with international classification standards
Yaoundé Central Hospital study, ICD-11 analysis
30%
in-hospital mortality rate recorded among admitted patients in one regional hospital case study, with delayed care identified as a key risk factor
Bafoussam Regional Hospital mortality study

MbaoMed was not assigned by a syllabus. It emerged from years of direct observation: clinic visits, community health work, conversations with patients and staff, all converging on a single diagnostic question: why do functioning hospitals keep losing patients to data chaos rather than a lack of medicine?

Conceptualized with a research-first methodology and built with available tools including AI assistance for rapid prototyping, while maintaining full conceptual ownership and engineering direction.

The Problem
Cameroonian clinics lose patient records to handwriting errors daily. Queue management fails because there is no data layer beneath it, meaning someone in critical condition can wait hours not because staff are absent, but because there is no system to triage and route them. These are engineering problems wearing the disguise of funding problems.
See community context → Instagram
The Insight
Six community service projects across three cities gave direct access to how institutions fail their people. The gap between the systems encountered in the United States and those experienced in Cameroon is real, and it is bridgeable.
The Approach
Empirical before technical. Patient observation, workflow mapping, and stakeholder input before a single line of code. AI-assisted rapid prototyping to compress the gap between insight and functional prototype.
What Comes Next
A research paper documenting the methodology is in preparation: a replicable model for building functional health data infrastructure with limited resources, AI assistance, and empirical community grounding.

MboaMed: Designing a Digital Health Access Platform for Cameroon Using Modern Web Technologies and AI-Assisted Development
Published in: Zenodo Research Repository  ·  Open Access  ·  CERN-endorsed Infrastructure

Healthcare access in Cameroon is constrained by fragmented information infrastructure, long waiting times, and limited digital health services, problems that disproportionately affect urban populations with no central resource for locating hospitals, booking appointments, or reaching emergency services. This paper documents the conception, design, and development of MboaMed, a multilingual digital health platform built with React 18, TypeScript, and Supabase, incorporating hospital discovery, doctor directories, appointment booking, symptom checking, and emergency access modules. The work demonstrates how iterative design science methodology and AI-assisted development tools can enable a single researcher to produce a functional, deployable healthcare system addressing real barriers to access in a resource-constrained environment.

My Role
Project Initiator & Research Lead
I identified the healthcare problem, defined the research objectives, designed the system architecture, directed development using AI-assisted tools, conducted iterative testing, and authored the full manuscript. Every conceptual, design, and engineering decision was mine.
Research Significance
Design Science Research in Healthcare
The paper demonstrates how a pre-university researcher can apply Design Science Research Methodology to produce a functional, evaluated software artifact addressing a documented public health challenge, and communicate it through scholarly publication.
Methodology
Iterative Design Science Approach
Following the DSRM framework, I studied the healthcare problem, identified user needs, defined functional requirements, built prototypes, evaluated usability across multiple iterations, and refined the system based on observations. The process is documented fully in the paper.
Future Direction
AI-Assisted Triage & EMR Integration
The paper's future work section proposes AI-assisted symptom triage, electronic medical records integration, telemedicine support, offline functionality for rural regions, and machine learning models for patient guidance while respecting ethical and privacy constraints.
